Overloading in scholar transport remains a huge problem in Mzansi. Not so long ago, a driver was arrested for having more than 40 pupils in a 16-seater in the Eastern Cape. This morning, Gauteng Premier David Makhura was part of the Okae Molao operation, they stopped a scholar transport which was carrying 65 learners. In a video, Makhura can be seen off-loading the 65 learners in the 26 seater bus. Sizwe Masondo, a parent, suggested that the government implements the idea of having Metro Cops in schools every morning. He said he is concerned about the safety of his kids, he added that he’s not sure whether their transport is safe.“The problem is that, my kids are the first to be picked up so I’m not sure whether it ends up being an over-load. When I ask my kids, they refuse to talk,” Sizwe said. Mmathepelo Mokoena said Makhura needs to do this more often and protect their kids. She said she is tired of moving from one transport to another. “Please have more of these. Something needs to be done. I have been moving my kids from one transport to another. I am tired,” she said. Makhura said the SAPS will be escorting the bus to school and the principal will be charged on sight.
