Western Cape fire authorities say they’re expecting a daunting fire season. This as the Cape Winelands District launched its Fire Season Preparedness Programme at Goudini in the Boland. The area spans more than 23-thousand square kilometers and consists of mountainous, fynbos rich areas which increase the risk of runaway fires. Deputy Fire Chief in the Western Cape, Ettiene Du Toit, says higher temperatures will arrive soon. ” We’ve seen it the past two fire seasons, if we take George and Knysna for an example, we referred to them as Mega fires it takes a lot of resources it consumes a lot of fuels it causes extensive damage to the economy in those specific areas the fire seasons from our experience are getting longer in the past we had a short fire season it’s now been extended with a couple of months. “
