Workers and shoppers have been evacuated from the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town following a fire in the basement. The City of Cape Town’s Fire services says an electrical transformer caught alight which resulted in fire services responding to the tourist destination. Earlier this evening shops were closed and workers were evacuated. Some workers say they were concerned when they were informed to leave the building but applauded rescue operations in the manner in which the situation was handled. Fire fighters responded to the incident just after 6 this evening. Workers have however since returned to the tourist destination.

  1. Its not true. We were stuck inside the mall. The doors were locked and we were locked inside. People were stuck in the lifts. The fire alarm was not triggered and the security didnt want to set off the alarm. My husband fought for over 30mins for them to let the alarm off
