YOUNG ADDICTS TAKE OVER PARK

SHOPPERS and students who use Gugu Dlamini Park want more protection. They say several people have been robbed in the Durban park, allegedly by young men who sit and drink incika, which is cough syrup mixed with a cool drink. They said once the men are high, they do crazy things, including robbing people of their belongings. A student said he no longer walked through the park as two of his friends had been robbed by the men. “They snatch our bags and run away. It’s easy for them to rob students because they often walk alone in the park on their way to university.” He said he had decided to stop using this route to university because he didn’t want to become a victim.Shopper Nompilo Mchun (33) said increased police visibility may improve safety. She said she shops at the centre near the park and used to go to the park afterwards to relax.“There is a satellite police station near this park but we don’t see any cops patrolling there.“We’re asking for these young men to be removed from the park before they rob more people.”KZN police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said no robbery cases that he knew of had been opened.“There is a satellite police station at The Workshop. We appeal to residents to open cases there.”
