A young child of about five years old has died and another one of the same age was critically injured when five vehicles were involved in a pile-up on the N-One outside Laingsburg. Western Cape Traffic Chief, Kenny Africa, says the multi-crash occurred late last night a few kilometres outside the Karoo town on the way to Touwsriver, direction Cape Town. A minibus taxi, one motor vehicle and three light delivery vehicles drove into each other at night time, resulting in one of the drivers also trapped until he was extricated from the wreckage by emergency and rescue personnel. The busy N-One, one of the main access roads to the Cape for holidaymakers this time of the year, was closed for several hours while the scene was cleared. The death toll on Western Cape roads since the beginning of December is now at least 115.
