The silly season is upon us and South Africans are gearing up for December which is traditionally when yearly bonuses and Christmas gifts are purchased for family and friends. While law-abiding citizens are spending their hard-earned cash, criminals are also prowling the streets looking for an easy score.
Just across the freeway, adjacent to Extension Three lies the affluent Eldorado Estates, or ‘Bushkoppies’, as the area is known, whose residents have been hard-hit by a spate of burglaries recently. Sterre Road residents were left fuming after a home in the street was burgled last week.
The homeowners woke up to find their car, three plasma screen television sets and expensive film equipment, missing. A Bushkoppies resident who lives in the street, Mpho Ntlaleng, said that burglaries are a trend in the area and asserted that these are committed by the same group of men who prowl the streets after dark.
Ntlaleng said, “Four men broke into my house and stole everything my family and I worked so hard for. When I spoke to my neighbours after the incident, we realised that the men who broke into my house were the same men who have broken into a number of houses in my street.”
According to an infuriated Ntlaleng, the four have been reported to police on numerous occasions have recently been released on bail.

She continued, “That is why they decided to ransack my place. This is not fair, we cannot have the same people targeting our homes, something needs to be done about this,” she said.
Cynthia Harris, who also lives in the area, said that with the festive season approaching, she feared that the burglary will only get worse.
“We are living in a quiet area so I think that’s why these criminals target us, we cannot continue to live in fear,” she said.
Constable Fezeka Khobo, the communications officer at the Eldorado Park Police Station said that residents have the right to request that patrol vans are deployed to the area.
She said, “Residents are encouraged to make sure that all windows, doors and gates are locked when they leave the house and when they go to bed. Another safety tip is to leave someone at home at all times, especially during the festive season, residents are advised to install alarm systems as well.”
Constable Khobo also advised the community to make use of the patrol vans and communicate with their sector manager.
“It is always handy to know who your sector manager is so you can call him or her at any time. The police station is open 24/7 to assist, I advise everyone to visit the police station to find out what the station has to offer. Know who your sector manager is and get the number of the patrol vans in your area,” said Khobo.

The Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane, has expressed shock and dismay following an attack on a Gauteng Traffic Police officer and the brutal killing of her husband at their residence in Struitsbult, Ekurhuleni on Friday.
Traffic Officer Moletsi was shot in the foot and taken to hospital. Her husband was shot in the chest, head and died on scene. The motive for the killing is unknown and police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder.

“This barbaric act happens in the backdrop of a commemoration of selfless and dedicated traffic officers who died in the line of duty about two weeks ago. An attack on law enforcement officers by callous criminals is an attack on the state.
“I have instructed the police to work around the clock and leave no stone unturned to ensure that perpetrators of this heinous crime are arrested swiftly.
“I call upon community members to play an active role in the fight against the killings of law enforcement officers. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Moletsi family during these trying times,” said MEC Nkosi-Malobane.

October has been a very busy month for the Eldorado Park police, according to communications officer Fezeka Khobo.
The month has seen many arrests being made and police monitoring a success in the area. The incidents below are an indication of the number of arrests made over the past four weeks.
A 27-year-old man was arrested for theft from a motor vehicle in old Eldorado Park and according to police reports, the vehicle owner was asleep when he heard footsteps in his yard. He awoke to investigate and startled the would-be thief who fled.

Khobo said, “The complainant saw the suspect whom he knew, jumping over the wall and running into the neighbour’s yard. A chase ensued, but the man escaped and the victim noticed that his car lights and covers were missing from his motor vehicle.”
A day later, the man was arrested and detained at the Eldorado Park Police Station holding cells pending a police investigation into the theft.

In an unrelated incident, a 24-year-old woman was arrested for contravening a protection order. It is alleged that the complainant was at home when her daughter pushed her and said that she was disrespected by the complainant.

“The mother did not sustain any injuries, but this was not the first time that the suspect was harassing the complainant, hence a protection order was set in place, but the suspect did not obey this,” said Khobo.
“The suspect was then arrested for contravening the protection order and detained,” she added.
Other incidents include arrests for being in possession of stolen motor vehicles, rape, kidnapping and robberies. Residents are urged to be vigilant at all times and to report any incidents to the police as soon as they happen.

MMC Michael Sun

The City of Johannesburg expresses its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of a woman who was killed during a gang-related shooting in Westbury yesterday.
The City also wishes her 10 year-old child a speedy recovery. She’s receiving medical attention after sustaining wounds from the tragic incident near the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital.
I am also informed that this is the third person who has been killed in the area in recent months. One suspect was arrested and investigation is currently in progress.
This senseless killing of an innocent mother and the wounding of her child by gang members calls for serious intervention. The unabated loss of lives without justice for the families and loved ones of victims cannot and will not be tolerated.
On learning of the incident, I immediately communicated with the South African Police Services  Provincial Commissioner, Lt. General Deliwe de Lange and the Chief of Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) David Tembe for urgent actions to be taken.
In response to this, 300 JMPD officers were deployed to Westbury to quell tensions that have risen due to the community’s frustrations.
I have asked for Provincial Commissioner De Lange and JMPD Chief Tembe to urgently increase visible policing, crime prevention joint operations in the Westbury area and set up a special task team to investigate these gang related crimes as a matter of urgency.
It is unacceptable that residents live in fear due to unscrupulous gangs and thugs in their own neighbourhoods.
The City remains committed to providing our residents with safe spaces to live, work and play without fear of any harm. I appeal to community members to come forward with any information that will bring the perpetrators of these crimes to face the full might of the law.

A fitting metaphor for our communities.

At the scene this morning, residents were gathered in the streets of Westbury for  what was said to be a peace march.  Burning tyres burning, concrete slabs, tree branches and cardboard pieces blocked off the roads in Westbury. Residents walked around Westbury and went on to Ontdekkers Road in hopes of getting attention from government. According to residents in the protest, the large group had police patrolling with them for safety, it was however when the crowd came back into the community of Westbury when they lost police visibility.
Residents from the Westbury community marching this morning.

The frustrated residents decided to go into the alley where the 45-year-old mother was shot yesterday; it seemed that the crowd was targeting an alleged drug dealer who lives in the court.

Within a few minutes of going into the alley, residents started screaming and running out of the area, it’s unclear as to what happen there but residents stated that people were running and screaming because there was a scare of them getting shot.
One of the barricaded roads.
At the time police officers were not in the street and residents were uneasy about giving comment as they said that there are drug dealers within the crowd. Leaving the scene, a group of residents were trying to get the crowd out of Tambokie Court. There were women and children amongst the group and the biggest concern were that they may get shot. Residents plan on staying in the main roads so that they can have police visibility with them at all times but it seemed like angry and frustrated residents wanted to retaliate with mob justice against the people they claim to be responsible for the shootings and deaths in the community.

The lifeless body of a 45-year-old woman lies in the alley.

A man has been taken in for questioning and is under police guard in hospital after a mother and her daughter were shot in Tambokie Court this afternoon.
The pair were on their way home from Coronationville when they were caught in the crossfire of a shooting.
Provincial Spokesperson, Colonel Lungelo Dlamini was at the scene and said:
“At about 12.40pm three people were allegedly shooting at each other and during the shooting a woman who was passing by was shot and killed. Her child was also shot and injured.”
The 45-year-old woman died on the scene and her child was rushed to hospital.

Police have detained a man suspected to be involved in the shooting. He was injured in the gun battle and is under police guard in hospital.
“The allegations are that the man in hospital was one of the people who were shooting but we haven’t found a firearm. We have detained him for questioning.”
Dlamini is hopeful the man will give police information on the men involved in the shooting. He added police did not know the motive of the shooting.
There have been messages circulating that a 3-year-old girl was also shot dead, however the Colonel confirmed this was not true.
