Yakeel Maharaj, Kevasha Mahabeer and Devan Kumarasamy of ASKDSA.

The athletes from the Association of Shotokan Karate-Do South Africa (ASKDSA) represented South Africa at the Region 5 Karate Championships in Namibia from May 21 to 26.
It was an honour and great experience for these athletes at the international championships.
Sensei Devan Kumarasamy (38) has been winning accolades since he was five-years-old. He is a karate instructor at Rydalvale Primary School and was selected to represent South Africa as a Protea at the Region 5 Karate Championships in Namibia.
He won gold for kata and bronze for kumite in the veterans division bringing honour to his country and association.
He is currently ranked second for kata and kumite in his division in South Africa. Sensei Kumarasamy was also a gold medallist at the Commonwealth Karate Championships in Durban last year.
Sensei Yakeel Maharaj (42) began karate at a later stage but excelled at various SA Championships over the last few years.
He teaches karate at Lenham Primary and was selected to represent South Africa as a Protea at the Region 5 Karate Championships in Namibia.

Sensei Yakeel won silver for kata in the veterans division flying the SA and the Association flags high. He is currently ranked third for kata and fifth for kumite in his division.
Kevasha Mahabeer (17) a matriculant at Danville Girls High has been excelling since she was five-years-old. She is currently a brown belt who is very determined and dedicated to her sport.
Kevasha was selected to represent South Africa as a Protea at the Region 5 Karate Championships in Namibia for kumite where she won a bronze medal in her division. She won silver and bronze at the Commonwealth Karate Championships in 2015 and 2018. She is currently ranked fifth in her division.
“These athletes have worked hard, made huge sacrifices and persevered until they attained their goal of earning their Protea colours,” said Sensei Vijay Govender, a former Protea athlete and coach.
Sensei Dennis Kumarasamy, president of ASKDSA, said that he was very proud of these athletes achievement which is the highest level attained in a sport in the country.
He congratulates them on their performance at the international event and encourages them to continue to excel in their future endeavours in the sport.
