The City of Cape Town’s Traffic services have impounded 47 minibus taxis that were illegally blockading Somerset Road at the Gallows hill vehicle testing centre. Police have also arrested at least three people for riotous behaviour. The Mayoral committee member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, says taxi drivers also barricaded the roadway with their vehicles on Saturday regarding an issue with operating licences. “This is the second illegal blockade in as many days and the City can’t tolerate such behaviour. It causes untold frustration to motorists, public transport vehicles, emergency vehicles on their way to hospital and otherwise and it harms our economy. The dispute is not even with the City as the matter at stake is operating licences linked to the provincial regulatory authority which is not under the control of the City.” (Image: R. Isaacs: EWN)

Well done. Taxis can not be allowed to be a law unto themselves!

Finally some good action from JP! We need to have a strong message sent to hooligans thatare trying to take the city hostage: no more!

From the comments we learn that it is fine for the taxi drivers to do as they please, even though they break the law. Even though I am not a JP supporter, I have to support him on this one. What’s right is right.
