To the relief of locals, Tshwane metro officials cleaned up the “problematic” Pretoria West street recently.
Locals had in the past complained that Schutte Street had become a “source of danger”.
Resident, Yolanda Lötter told Rekord this week that municipal workers started cleaning the area on Tuesday.
“We are very grateful that the metro cleaned up the street this week,” she said.
“Now we can start feeling proud of our area again. We hope it will stay this clean.”

She said the workers picked up the garbage scattered in the street.
Rekord reported last week that the area were driving residents up the wall.
Besides the illegal dumping in the street, residents said they feared for their safety after squatters started moving into the area.
“We are certain that the people living there are involved in crime in the area and even prostitution,” she said.
“There was a woman that lived there who flashed at oncoming motorists, but we managed to chase her away.”
Lötter said the squatters remained after the clean-up.
“We hope that the metro sends someone to remove them,” she said.
Resident Silvia Silva said they had other concerns as well such as streetlights being “out for months”.
“When it is dark we cannot see a thing and if the dogs start barking, I get afraid because I do not know what is out there.”
Two weeks ago, Elandspoort residents had taken matters into their own hands cleaning up the alleyway on the corner of Steyr Avenue and Mike du Toit Road that had been dirtied up by dumpers for the second time.

“I cannot believe that people would dump here illegally again after we cleaned the area, especially after what happened,” said Community Reaction Unit (CRU) member, Joey Botes.

She was referring to an incident in April, when a 52-year-old woman was attacked and raped in the alleyway.
Botes said last week the woman had succumbed to her injuries few days after the attack.
She thanked Jan of Jan’s Garden services in Danville for helping the volunteers with the grasscutting again this week.
She urged residents to stop dumping illegally.
