Zululand Cluster Communications Officer, Captain Nkosie Gwala, has just confirmed that a police vehicle carrying prisoners from Vryheid to Nongoma was hijacked this morning.
Initial reports from the scene indicate that two prisoners overpowered the two police officers responsible for the transportation, taking their firearms and cell phones.

Some of the prisoners are believed to have been taken along with the vehicle, while other prisoners allegedly escaped into the surrounding bushes.
Station commander at SAPS Nongoma, Brigadier James Luvuno, is currently on his way to the scene to assess the situation.

Motorists and residents are urged to exercise caution as the prisoners are armed and dangerous.
