With the Gaterite Helpers Run completed on Sunday, the Verulam Athletic Club members are now bracing themselves for the annual double header with the Gaterite Charity Run on April 7 and the final Comrades qualifier on May 1.
The charity run consists of a 2km and 4km fun run while the qualifier has distances of 10km, 21, 1km and 42, 2,km on offer with a 5:30am start from the Verulam Recreation Grounds.
This weekend saw members take on the actual Gaterite challenge route in what is dubbed the ‘Helpers Run’. Basically, during this event, members who will be on duty on the day of the race, had the opportunity to run the actual race.
With an early 5am start, Tashvir Singh continued to post leading victory with a 53 minute finish ahead of VAC Waterloo juniors, Precious, Smangele, Siyabonga, Nosipho, Mbalenhle and Ninigi heading the next bus.

Pam Zwane edged Zama Ngcobo and Yvonne Nair, who came through in 1:32 with Melisha Ramsaroop and novice, Deon in only his second run showing improvement in a sub-two hour 1:47 finish.
Daniel Singh, Dolly Moodley, Christopher Peters and Dominic Govender made up the 10km finishers within two hours.
Samson Tawarimira posted a 42, 2km last week in the Deloitte Challenge followed by a fast 21, 1km half marathon in consecutive weekends in 1:37. Junior, Roland Ngidi eased through in 1:55.
Andrew Dlamini, another Comrades starter from last week’s 42, 2km run completed his half marathon in 2:12, nine minutes ahead of Joyce Ngidi.
A 2:37 finish awaited Sarah Naidoo ahead of Raesa Bayat in 3:01. Beena Maharaj walked through in 3:08 with Tharushka and Pam Sookoo completing team VAC half marathon runners in 3:21.
Siyanda Makhanya maintained a steady pace in preparation for the forthcoming Durban City Marathon with a 3:12 finish ahead of Simon Blose in 4:03, satisfied with his preparation for the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon.
